Finishing our sermons on the creation week, Brother Sean preaches on Genesis 2:1-3. In Genesis 2:1-3, God lays out the foundation for obeying the Sabbath. Brother Sean asks us to read this passage in light of the creation formula used in day 1-6. Day seven is different in four ways:
- God does not speak on day 7.
- God blesses the day by calling it holy.
- God names the day holy.
- There is no passage of time.
Since God does not speak, he has concluded his work – he rests (Sabbath). We too must be like God. How do we act like God? By calling blessing the Sabbath and keeping the Sabbath as holy we speak to what our freedom from sin (Deut. 5:12-15) and relates directly to our ethical conduct (Exodus 20:8-11). Finally since there is no passage of time, we see the Sabbath as a continual and eternal concept. The Sabbath does not answer to a lunar calendar (as many Hebrew celebrations do) nor to a solar calendar, but God alone is Lord of the Sabbath.
