The Cooperative Program.
As a part of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), Summerville First Baptist participates with other SBC churches in the Cooperative Program (CP). According to the CP’s webpage, “the Cooperative Program is Southern Baptists’ unified plan of giving through which cooperating Southern Baptist churches give a percentage of their undesignated receipts in support of their respective state convention and the Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministries.”
What does that mean? Summerville First Baptists gives a portion of its tithes and offerings to the CP. These donations help to fund missions here in North America and all over the world. While fulfilling the Great Commission (See Matthew 28:16) is the main point of CP, the CP also gives to many different areas to help fulfill the Great Commission.
One example of CP giving is our own pastor Sean Wegener. The CP gives funds to our six different seminaries. The purpose is to help fund the seminaries and keep student tuition low. Summerville First Baptist Church’s giving to the CP helped to fund pastor Sean’s tuition. At Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) each student who is a member of an SBC church (like Summerville First) has their tuition reduced by 50%.
If you’d like to know more about the CP, visit the CP website or watch this video:*
*Please note this video mentions giving to the Southern Baptist Texas Convention. Summerville First Baptist does not give to the SBTC, but rather gives to the Georgia Baptist Convention (GBC).
Two Special Offerings of the CP
There are two special offerings each year for the CP. Summerville First Baptist takes up a special collection for each offering during that offerings season.
- The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering
- The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
Annie Armstrong Easter Offering
The Annie Armstrong Easter Offering specifically goes to the North American Mission Board (NAMB). NAMB “exists to help every church take its next step in missions and encourage every believer to live on mission.” (See NAMB’s webpage).
This year (2018) Summerville First Baptist has set a goal of giving $3000 to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.
Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering specifically goes to the International Missions Board (IMB). The IMB wants to “vastly expand our missions efforts for the spread of the gospel to every people group on the planet, forging dynamic network of pathways connecting churches and individuals directly to IMB missionary teams around the world.” You can learn more about the IMB at their website
